How Far Can an E-Bike Go on One Charge?

One of the first questions every new rider asks is how far an e-bike will go on a single charge. The honest answer: it depends. Range is shaped by your battery, your bike and how you ride.

Start with battery size

Battery capacity is measured in watt-hours (Wh). A larger battery stores more energy, so, all else equal, it goes further. Many of the e-bikes in our store use batteries between roughly 350Wh and 800Wh.

What makes range go down

  • Higher assist levels and throttle use: the biggest factor. More help from the motor uses more energy.
  • Hills and headwinds: climbing and pushing into the wind take more power.
  • Rider and cargo weight: heavier loads need more energy to move.
  • Tires: wide fat tires and low tire pressure add rolling resistance.
  • Cold weather: lithium batteries deliver less energy in the cold.
  • Stop-and-go riding: frequent acceleration uses more energy than steady cruising.

Why the advertised range is a best case

Manufacturers usually measure range in the lowest assist mode, with a lighter rider on flat, paved roads. Treat the number as an upper limit and plan your regular rides well within it.

Easy ways to get more miles

  1. Use a lower assist level on flat ground and save the higher levels for hills.
  2. Keep your tires at the recommended pressure.
  3. Shift gears like you would on a regular bike, so the motor works efficiently.
  4. Start smoothly instead of using full throttle from a stop.
  5. Store and charge your battery indoors at room temperature.

How to compare bikes

Look at the battery capacity and the manufacturer’s estimated range together, and think about your longest regular ride. Every e-bike in our store lists its battery and estimated range in the Specifications tab. Compare our e-bikes.
